Mijn vriend is 1.98. Een grote kerel. Toen we ons bad uitkozen gingen we dan ook voor het grootste formaat van het type dat we wilden hebben. Shiri en ik pasten dus prima saampjes in dat bad. Gelukkig maar, want het was een lange nacht.
Sinds Shiri ziek was geworden was hij niet meer zo content met mijn aandacht. Hij wilde vooral veel met rust worden gelaten. Maar die laatste nacht koos hij ervoor om uitgebreid tegen me aan te komen liggen. Lekker warm tegen mijn buik aan, zoals hij dat altijd had gedaan. Heerlijk.
De nacht was lang, maar ging ook te snel voorbij. Voordat ik genoeg genoten had was het moment daar. Het geluid van de deurbel maakt dat mijn hart sneller ging kloppen. Ik vond het allemaal zo raar. Ja, Shiri is een kat. En ja, mensen beslissen voor dieren. Maar het hele idee dat je beslist over het leven van een ander, kat of niet, is echt heel gek.
De dierenarts legde ons uit wat er zou gaan gebeuren. Eerst zou Shiri een spuitje krijgen om in slaap te vallen, daarna een spuitje om zijn hart te stoppen. De plooi waarin ik mijn gezicht tijdens deze uitleg probeerde te houden, leek wel bevroren. Zakelijk knikte ik ja en natuurlijk, terwijl het gevoel van onwerkelijkheid met de seconde groeide.
Ik nam Shiri in mijn armen en knuffelde hem zo lang mogelijk. Mijn vriend bood aan om hem vast te houden. Maar na 13 jaar samen vond ik dat ik het aan hem verplicht was om ook dit samen mee te maken.
